Check if you need building control approval
Building regulations set minimum standards for the design, construction and alteration of buildings.
You may need building control approval before you build, extend, convert or alter a property.
Building control approval is different from planning permission. Your project may need one or both.
You are responsible for making sure the work complies with building regulations, even if you employ a builder, designer or contractor.
Use the LABC Front Door service to check if your project needs a building regulations application.
Choose an application type
The application you need depends on the type of work and whether it has already started.
Make a Full Plans application if you want us to check your plans, specifications and calculations before work begins.
A Building Notice may be suitable for smaller projects where you are confident the work will comply with building regulations. We will not approve your plans before work starts, but we will inspect the work as it progresses.
If unauthorised work has already been carried out without building control approval, you may need to make a Regularisation application.
If work was being overseen by a Registered Building Control Approver and the Initial Notice has been cancelled, you may need to make a Reversion application.
Some work may be exempt from building regulations. Certain installations may also be completed and certified through a registered Competent Person Scheme.
