The Government has confirmed a new North East Essex unitary authority, bringing Colchester, Braintree, Tendring and Essex councils together to deliver more efficient, locally focused services.
The government has confirmed that Greater Essex will move to five new unitary councils by April 2028, simplifying services and replacing the existing 15 local authorities.

From restored heritage and improved routes to a livelier city centre and practical support for wellbeing and housing, 2025 brought changes residents could see and feel.
The settlement is currently out for consultation with councils and will only be confirmed when it passes through Parliament in January or February 2026.
