The Natural History Museum Project

More information on The Natural History Museum Project.

Colchester's Natural History Museum, located in one of the city’s oldest and most iconic buildings – a Grade II listed deconsecrated church – is set for a transformative overhaul. Run by the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, the historic museum attracts over 30,000 visitors each year, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s natural heritage.

With plans to modernise the space while preserving the building's unique character, the project aims to reimagine the museum’s exhibits, offering an inspiring, deeper and more engaging exploration of the East of England's natural history. Key developments include the creation of a dynamic hub for community-led learning and discovery, and a dedicated educational space designed specifically for school groups.

The project has already secured significant funding, including a generous £296,725 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to progress development plans.

We expect the scheme to cost over £5 million in total, with further funding applications planned for 2025.
