The nomination recognises our child‑led work on the redesign of the Colchester Castle Park play area, a project built on listening, inclusion, and real community insight
The Freeburgess designation is a ceremonial honour with origins in the 1189 Royal Charter issued by Richard the Lionheart and is open to any eligible Colchester resident.
This recognition reflects the hard work of councillors from across the political spectrum and officers who are committed to continuous improvement, ensuring that the council remains responsive and forward-thinking in a time of change.
From restored heritage and improved routes to a livelier city centre and practical support for wellbeing and housing, 2025 brought changes residents could see and feel.
The settlement is currently out for consultation with councils and will only be confirmed when it passes through Parliament in January or February 2026.
