A planning application has been submitted for a new community centre at Kingswood Heath, bringing forward plans to create a modern, flexible community facility for local residents.
The new community centre would be funded through Section 106 contributions, which are payments made by developers to support local infrastructure and community facilities needed as areas grow. In addition, Myland Community Council has committed £130,000 towards the project.
The centre is proposed for land next to Camulos Academy on Whitmore Drive, transforming an existing hardstanding area into a community space for local people.
A space shaped by the community
The plans have been developed following a programme of public consultation, which showed strong support for a new community hub in the area. Residents said they would use the centre for activities, events and social gatherings.
Colchester City Council commissioned Barefoot and Gilles Architects to develop the design, working closely with local councillors, community groups and clubs to ensure it reflects local needs and can be delivered within the available budget.
The proposed centre would include a flexible main hall capable of accommodating up to 100 people for a range of activities, alongside a kitchen, smaller meeting and office spaces, and accessible facilities. The plans also include a Changing Places facility, providing specialist accessible toilet and changing facilities for people with complex disabilities.
Outside, the site would provide 36 parking spaces and parking for up to 10 bicycles. The design also incorporates solar panels and new landscaping to support biodiversity.
Building stronger communities
The Kingswood Heath community centre is intended to provide a place where residents can come together, take part in activities and events, and build connections within their local community.
Next steps
The planning application will now be considered through the usual planning process. Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to take around 12 months.
