New Bikewise signage guides cyclists to the Secure Bike Park

We are stepping up our commitment to active travel and cycle security with a series of improvements across the city.

Three people stand beside a bicycle secured to a bike rack on Colchester High Street with a sign promoting secure bike parking.

As part of the refreshed Bikewise campaign, new metal plaques have been installed on bike racks throughout Colchester. These durable signs replace previous stickers and provide clear guidance on securing bikes with quality locks and promoting the use of the Secure Bike Park in Portal Precinct, off Sir Isaacs Walk.

The guidance on the new plaques reflects recommendations from Essex Police, who regularly advise cyclists to use high quality D-locks and choose well lit, secure parking locations.

Cyclists are already benefitting from new cycle lockers at Leisure World, providing secure storage for visitors and encouraging active travel to the leisure centre. In addition, bike lockers at Colchester Town rail station, operated by Spokesafe and funded by Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, offer app controlled, pay-as-you-go secure storage for cyclists combining rail and bike travel. The Secure Bike Park in the city centre, also operated by Spokesafe, continues to provide a safe and convenient option for cyclists.

Cllr Andrea Luxford Vaughan, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Sustainable Development, said: “The “The message is simple: we want cycling in Colchester to be easy, safe and stressfree. Whether you’re heading to Leisure World, catching a train from Town station or popping into the city centre, these facilities – from new cycle lockers to our Secure Bike Park – give cyclists reliable places to store their bikes. And our refreshed Bikewise signage helps riders make informed choices about keeping their bikes secure.”

Andrea Brady, Colchester City Centre Team Sergeant at Essex Police, said: "We welcome these new cycle security measures across Colchester. Simple steps such as using a strong D-lock and choosing secure parking locations make a real difference in deterring theft. The enhanced signage and facilities support our ongoing work to keep cyclists and their property safe across the city."
