Helplinethe team based at Colchester Town Hall that supports residents across Colchester and Tendring, has secured a new two‑year contract from the NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB).
The contract means Helpline will continue responding quickly when someone has fallen and the Ambulance Service asks for support. This fast response helps reduce long waits, avoids unnecessary distress, and ensures people get the help they need as soon as possible.
A service that reduces pressure on the NHS
Helpline plays a key role in helping older and vulnerable residents live independently and safely at home. By providing reassurance and rapid help, the service reduces avoidable A&E visits, prevents hospital stays and eases pressure on the Ambulance Service and wider NHS teams.
Support available 24/7 from Colchester Town Hall
Operating day and night from the historic Town Hall, Helpline deals with thousands of calls every year. The team mobilises responders, offers reassurance, and helps people stay safely at home whenever possible. These early interventions help residents stay well for longer and maintain independence.
What Helpline delivers
The renewed contract is one part of a wider package of services provided by Helpline, including:
- Falls service: fast, on‑scene support for people who have fallen, helping them recover at home and avoiding unnecessary A&E visits.
- Out of hours call centre: around‑the‑clock advice, support, and escalation for vulnerable residents, carers, and partner organisations.
- CCTV monitoring service: professional monitoring that helps keep the public safe and supports the police, community safety teams and emergency services.
A Team Making a Real Difference
Helpline is also a valued local employer. Staff describe it as a rewarding place to work, with a strong focus on training, wellbeing and career development.
Working from the centre of Colchester’s civic life, the team knows every call has the potential to greatly improve someone’s day, health, or safety.
Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council and Cabinet Member for Strategy, welcomed the announcement: “Helpline plays a vital role in supporting residents to live independently and with dignity. We’re delighted that the ICB recognises the value our service delivers every day. This contract ensures that vulnerable people across Colchester and North East Essex continue to receive fast, compassionate and high-quality support whenever they need it.”
Cllr Martyn Warnes, Chair of the Board Amphora, said: “We are incredibly proud of the work Helpline does for our community. This renewed contract reflects the professionalism, dedication and care shown by our staff day in, day out. Their quick responses and calm reassurance make a real difference to people’s lives, and we look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the ICB to support residents across Colchester and North East Essex.”
