Riders across Essex came together to celebrate another successful year of Essex Pedal Power at the Big Ride Out on Sunday, 12 July.
The special anniversary event saw riders join rides in their local communities, bringing together participants, staff and volunteers for a day of achievement, connection and celebration.
Impact over the years
A total of 44 riders took part, including Essex Pedal Power staff and volunteers. Among them was an inspiring group of five cyclists who completed an impressive 85-mile ride, celebrating the life-changing impact of cycling and the thousands of free bikes distributed through the scheme in Essex since 2021.
In Colchester, riders overcame personal challenges, including anxiety about joining the group. Emmanuel, who enjoys repairing bikes and helping others, led part of the ride, demonstrating local leadership in action. Emma, a regular on the Thursday Women's rides, said the event helped her build confidence, enjoy the outdoors and connect with other cyclists. “I felt supported throughout the ride and encouraged to go at my own pace. Cycling along the Wivenhoe Trail was a calm and enjoyable experience.”
Bringing generations together through cycling
The day highlighted the project's ability to connect and support people of all ages. The youngest rider joined at just four years old and learnt to ride through the scheme, while the oldest participant was an impressive 85 years old, demonstrating that cycling really is for everyone.
Wendy spoke about what the day meant to her family: "My son Clark is 6 now, but he was just four when he joined the scheme and learnt to ride with us. Two years ago, he had the smallest bike available, a 16-inch bike, and he's been working his way up ever since. We had such a brilliant time. It was wonderful to get out together as a family and enjoy an afternoon of exercise, challenge and meeting like-minded people. It was especially meaningful for us to celebrate our youngest son's achievement alongside so many supportive people."
Celebrating determination and team spirit
One of the most memorable moments of the day came at the cricket club in Harwich, where participants gathered to welcome the cyclists completing the 85-mile challenge. Riders applauded as the long-distance team arrived, providing a powerful boost for the final stretch and creating a fitting celebration of perseverance, community spirit and achievement.
Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection, said: "This event reflected everything Essex Pedal Power has achieved over the last few years: helping people learn to ride, building confidence, improving wellbeing, and creating stronger, more connected communities through cycling."
