Colchester’s historic Mayor Making ceremony took place at Moot Hall this morning, marking the official appointment of Cllr Andrew Ellis as the 193rd Mayor of Colchester.
A highlight of the civic calendar, the ceremony brought together councillors, dignitaries and guests to celebrate the continuation of a tradition that dates back centuries in Britain’s oldest recorded city.
Formal appointment and civic roles
During the ceremony, Cllr Ellis was formally sworn in, receiving the badge of office and Mayor’s robe before addressing those in attendance. He is supported in his mayoral role by his wife, Nicky, who will accompany him throughout the year as Mayoress.
Following the appointment, members also elected Cllr Paul Smith as Deputy Mayor. His wife, Mrs Sarah Smith, becomes Deputy Mayoress.
Mayoral theme: Growing Well
As part of the proceedings, the new Mayor announced the theme for his year in office: Growing Well – Helping Colchester Flourish.
The theme focuses on the importance of nature, wellbeing and community, encouraging residents to reconnect with the outdoors, green spaces and each other. It reflects Cllr Ellis’s lifelong connection to Colchester’s landscape and his belief in the positive impact of nature on mental health and community wellbeing.
Mayor’s statement
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Andrew Ellis, said: “Nicky and I are deeply honoured to serve as Mayor and Mayoress of this wonderful city. Colchester has meant so much to me throughout my life, and I am incredibly proud to represent its people.
“Our theme, ‘Growing Well – Helping Colchester Flourish’, is about more than gardening. It’s about supporting wellbeing, strengthening communities and celebrating the natural environment that makes our city so special. We look forward to working with residents, volunteers and organisations across the city in the year ahead.”
Mayoral charities announced
The Mayor also announced the four charities that will benefit from fundraising during his mayoral year:
- Colchester Zoological Society
- Mind Mid and North East Essex
- Camp JoJo
- Army Benevolent Fund
Chaplain appointment
In addition, Reverend Doctor Amanda Elmes has been appointed as Mayoral Chaplain.
Continuing civic tradition
The Mayor Making ceremony at Moot Hall remains a central part of Colchester’s civic life, offering residents the opportunity to celebrate local heritage and mark the beginning of a new mayoral year.
