Colchester City Council’s new Multi-Faith Committee has expressed its deepest condolences to all those affected by the recent attacks on people gathering to celebrate Hanukkah – a time of light and joy for the Jewish faith.

Leaders from across the city’s diverse faith communities recently met to build on the Mayor’s multi-faith prayers, committing to promote inclusion, mutual understanding, and a shared response during times of community tension.

The Committee highlighted the city’s positive record, noting relatively few reports of local hate crime. Members agreed to encourage reporting and welcome police support, while fostering trust and understanding between Colchester’s many communities and improving awareness of key events in every faith tradition.

Councillor David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, joined the Mayor and faith leaders in affirming solidarity: “We stand with all those affected by the terrible events in Australia, at Bondi Beach. We send our condolences, love, and best wishes to our Jewish community and all others impacted. Colchester is a place of welcome – a safe, tolerant, and inclusive city. We denounce such acts and encourage peace, mutual respect, and understanding.”
