Essex Pedal Power Colchester is celebrating a major milestone, announcing the 900th free bike given away this month.
Launched in Greenstead in May 2023, the project initially aimed to give out 800 bikes. Thanks to extra funding from Sport England, the project has secured an additional 160 bicycles and has been giving out 70+ recycled bicycles.
The real success of the project lies in the way it has changed how people live, how people travel and improve their health and wellbeing.
Yemi received bikes for his whole family, and they now enjoy cycling together. The whole family now rides to school, which made them healthier and save travel costs. “Cycling with my kids is the time I always treasure," Yemi said. "Cycling provides happiness that money can’t buy.”
For Karen, a free bike was a lifesaver after her car failed its MOT and she couldn't afford to fix it. She hasn't worried about using a car since getting her free bike. Cycling helps her feel relaxed before work and sets her up for a stress-free day. The physical impact has been amazing: As a Type 2 diabetic, Karen has lost two stone in weight and now only needs one tablet a day, down from seven. “I look and feel a lot better,” Karen shared. “I feel so much more positive in my life and my outlook.”
Councillor Jocelyn Law, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection said: “We extend our thanks to the residents who shared their journeys; their powerful stories are shining examples of how this project changes lives and creates a healthier, more connected community. I encourage everyone be part of the project, either joining a lead ride, a men’s or women’s cycle groups, a bike fixing workshop, or come help building some bikes. Give yourself a chance to explore something you never expected.”
A video has been produced sharing these powerful stories of residents and how their lives have changed. Check it out at Essex Pedal Power Colchester & Tendring 2025.
