Young people from across Colchester came together this summer to enjoy a fun day of free activities as Youth Fest 2026 returned to the city.
More than 1,000 young people engaged with activities during the festival, which took place on 4 August. Young people and families took part in activities throughout the day that were designed to help young people get active, learn new skills, try something different and spend time with friends in a safe and welcoming environment.
Bringing young people together
Youth Fest offered a wide range of free activities, including sports sessions, creative workshops, performances and wellbeing activities. Throughout the day, young people had opportunities to stay active, build confidence, develop new skills and discover opportunities available within their community.
The festival was delivered in partnership with a wide range of local organisations and support services, helping young people and families discover activities, clubs and services available throughout the year. Young people also met representatives from emergency services such as Essex Police and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, building positive connections and learning more about the support available in their community.
Building confidence and creating opportunities
Feedback gathered during the festival highlighted the positive impact the event had on those who took part.
Many young people said they enjoyed trying activities they had not experienced before, meeting new people and spending time with friends. Others reported learning about local clubs, groups and services that they were not previously aware of.
Partners also noted high levels of engagement throughout the day, with many young people returning to activities, developing new skills and showing an interest in continuing activities beyond the festival.
Supporting opportunities for young people
Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection, said: "It was fantastic to see so many young people getting involved in Youth Fest and making the most of everything on offer. Events like this give young people the chance to try something new, build confidence, meet new people and discover activities and support available in their local community.
"I'd like to thank all the organisations, volunteers and partners who helped make the day such a success. Most importantly, thank you to the young people and families who came along and created such a positive atmosphere throughout the event. We hope the festival has inspired young people to continue exploring the opportunities available to them across Colchester."
Youth Fest forms part of the council's wider commitment to creating positive opportunities for young people and supporting their wellbeing, development and connection to their local community.
The success of this year's event demonstrated the value of bringing together young people, families, community organisations and local services in one accessible location.
